A friend can best be described as one who's willing to stand by you in every situation, a good friend could go the extra mile for you if given the chance.
The question then is - What makes a friend good? or What makes a good friend? Whichever way you'd like to phrase it.
A page out of the classification of people as introverts and extroverts. Most people consider introverts to be better confidants and as such better friends because extroverts are deemed loud, but I say a friend shouldn't be characterised by the level of his/ her outgoing personality.
A friend is made mostly by chance but a good friend should be decided on criteria far tangible than how he/she relates to the general world, how he/she relates with you.
She can be nasty to the rest of the world but is very calm with anything that has to do with you. He could be nonchalant to the entire world but will be ready to move mountains to help you out when you're in need. That is a good friend, notice and treasure such early, so as not to leave un-nutured what should turn out to be good friendship.
